fYear :
2004
fDate :
June 28 2004-July 1 2004
Abstract :
The William C. Carter Award is presented annually since 1997 to recognize an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of dependable computing through his or her graduate dissertation research. The award honors the late William C. Carter, a key figure in the formation and development of the field of dependable computing, and someone who always took the time to encourage, mentor, and inspire newcomers to the field. This award honors and carries on this aspect of his legacy. The award is sponsored by the IEEE Technical Committee on Fault-Tolerant Computing (TC-FTC) and the IFIP Working Group on Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance (WG 10.4). Requirements for the award were announced in the Call for Contributions. To qualify, a paper based on a student´s dissertation must have been submitted as a regular paper to the DCC Symposium within DSN, with the student as the first author. Both current graduate students and former graduate students, no more than two years past completion of their dissertation, were eligible. All Carter Award submissions accepted as regular papers to the DCC Symposium were evaluated by the Steering Committee of the Conference. From this evaluation, the Committee selected Alex X. Liu as this year´s winner based on the research described in: Diverse Firewall Design ?? Alex X. Liu, Mohamed G. Gouda (U. of Texas at Austin, USA).
