Abstract :
At West Virginia University one has been using a departmental final examination (DFE) as a tool in instructional quality assurance for over thirty years. This began as a check on Helen Plants´ experiments with programmed instruction (PI), when it was felt that PI should not be used unless it was as good as lectures. It was found that the DFEs provided valuable feedback on instruction in several other ways, and the University is continuing to use them
