Abstract :
This paper presents our experimental studies on the sketching behavior with and without interactive pen display. In this paper, we set up two groups to identify the context of sketching patterns. The experimental group including a senior designer and a junior designer communicated at a distance with an interactive pen display each side. The reference group including another senior designer and another junior designer communicated each other face-to-face throughout collaborative design communication without an interactive pen display. The findings indicated that both creating behaviors and indicating behaviors were significantly different in the design briefing stage between groups. By using interactive pen display, four sketching patterns were found including creation, modification, annotation and indication. Besides, the behaviors of operating applications of the interactive pen display were analyzed.
