Abstract
The paper describes how TINA (Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture) concepts can be applied to the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) to achieve flexible connectivity control in the radio access network. It presents a general Network Resource Information Model (NRIM) for the UMTS, defined as a strict extension of the TINA model. The required enhancements to the TINA NRIM are introduced and the application of the resulting model to the UMTS is described in detail. In particular, the multi-bearer and macro-diversity features and the handover procedure are analyzed. Examples are provided to illustrate the concepts presented
