Abstract :
In the past up to the middle of the 1990s, the handling and use of SF6 was more or less sorrow-less. Driven by ecological arguments and more sense of responsibility switchgear designs and industrial processes were developed to reduce the amount and the emission of this gas. The ALSTOM eco-approach starts already in the very first design phase with the selection of insulation materials and ends with a disposal concept at the end of the life of the equipment. This environmentally friendly approach shows, that gas insulated switchgear is still having its justification in electrical distribution. The solutions available today are qualified by an overall approach with respect to the environment and are better prepared for the coming tasks in the electrical networks than any other type of switchgear.
