Abstract :
Discusses how computers equipped with English-to-phoneme translation routines can be augmented with computer graphics to aid in teaching cued speech. Cued speech uses fourteen hand positions and shapes to represent the forty-one phonemes of the English language, in a manner similar to the alphabet. Most personal computers on the market have programs or hardware to convert English language statements to computer-generated speech. The authors propose to use these capabilities to aid in teaching cued speech. Cued Speech Teacher-Tutor-Translator program will provide for three specific phases of instruction: teaching, tutoring, and translation. They review the general outline for the teaching aspect of the program
