Abstract
Commonly, a discrete NLMS adaptive FIR equalizer is connected in cascade with the channel to combat the multipath interference. We investigate the use of an active- parameter detection technique within the NLMS adapted FIR equalizer, the aim of which is to adapt only the active (or significant) taps of the equalizer. Derivation of the active- parameter detection guided NLMS equalization is presented. Based on standard practice, the fractionally spaced equalization technique is also included to enhance the system performance. Simulations of this newly proposed fractionally spaced FIR equalizer demonstrate the accelerated convergence.
