Abstract :
DC coefficient restoration scheme is a technique which can be used to increase the compression ability of transform image coding by not transmitting the DC coefficients but instead estimating them from the transmitted AC component. Rate-distortion optimal AC coefficient thresholding can allocate the bits to the AC coefficients efficiently with minimum distortion. In this paper, we propose a way to combine the two algorithms together to form a new coding scheme. We find that the proposed coding scheme outperforms the JPEG scheme significantly, especially at low bit rates
