  • Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach for optimal compensation of current harmonics produced due to the presence of nonlinear loads in power systems by the implementation of Active power filter (APF). This is because optimizing the power system networks using conventional mathematical modelling based linearized approaches is quite difficult due to the complex, nonlinear and non-stationary nature of systems that involve a large number of inequality constraints. The implementation of Bacterial foraging optimization (BFO) to two different APF control strategies i.e. conventional and modified p-q schemes has been proposed here to lower down the source current Total harmonic distortion (THD) sufficiently below 5% in order to satisfy the IEEE-519 std. even under distorted supply. Extensive MATLAB simulations and comparative evaluation were carried out for the two APF control schemes employing BFO algorithm.
