Since the introduction of reform and opening up policy, education in patriotism in colleges and universities, which was attached great importance by Party and State, adapted to the trend of our era and continually made improvement and innovation, making gratifying results and accumulating precious experiences. It has experienced three periods: recovering and exploring period (1978-1988), gradually improving period (1989-1999) and all-round developing period (2000 till present) It has important theoretical value and practical significance to have a correct understanding on education in patriotism in colleges and universities by reviewing its development course over the past three decades for developing education in patriotism in colleges and universities in this new period.
