Abstract
This paper presents the results of a research work aimed at improving the performance of RFID systems operating in the presence of metal. The effects of metal on the magnetic field distribution and on the RFID system performance are described. The countermeasures to be adopted to increase the reading range and/or to reduce the negative effects of metal are explained. Finally the characteristics and the performance of different RFID transponders specifically studied to be mounted on metallic containers are presented
