Abstract :
We present new design approaches using electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures to realize novel antennas for wireless communications. In order to demonstrate the advantages of new designs, we consider a couple of target applications and design goals. We demonstrate the improvement of the efficiency of on-body antennas and reduction of mutual coupling for MIMO arrays. The design is accomplished by optimizing the structure via genetic algorithm (GA) for the desired performances over the intended frequency bands. The results presented in this work demonstrate the possibilities of the EBG structures for improving the performances of the conventional antennas
