Abstract
One of the most memory-intensive and power consuming operations in videoconferencing is motion estimation. We review several motion-estimation strategies that employ block matching criteria with low computational complexity. We also introduce a matching criterion that explicitly incorporates the computation load of the host processor. This modified cost function can lead to very low computation complexity for the motion-estimation process. Performance comparisons using the various matching criteria within a H.263 video coder are presented
