Abstract
Standardization can be performed only in a field in which the knowledge of the physical phenomena and of the behavior of the given installation is sufficiently known. The role of the universities is to perform research in order to clarify such these points before a standard is written. The universities can also provide a more balanced approach, which is not submitted to the commercial interests of manufacturers. The paper also discusses the fact that the university contribution can be very dependent on the field of activity of different technical committees.
