Abstract :
The requirements for optical sources used in long-haul fiber-optic communication systems are related to the characteristics of single-mode silica fibers operated at 1.55 μm. The elementary concepts of distributed feedback (DFB) and distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) lasers are explained. Grating resonators and reflectors are described, and the theory of the frequency-selective property of corrugated gratings is explained. The detrimental consequences of the spatial hole burning phenomenon for the performance of DFB lasers are explained. Nine experimental DFB/DBR laser structures are briefly described and compared.
