Abstract :
This paper deals with the calculation of the rating of a diesel engine generator for a particular installation. What parameters must be known and how will the installation be made “future proof”? Also what are the guidelines for such calculations commonly used in the industry today? After this, the paper describes risks with under- or over-dimensioning the diesel engine and the generator. Environmental aspects to consider when dimensioning are discussed. For the diesel engine itself, emission levels, air pollution matters related to the combustion process and technical developments are discussed, as are fuel handling systems, fuel quality and noise levels, treating also the environmental point of view. Furthermore national and international standards and rules for diesel engine generators are dealt with. Reliability figures for diesel engine generators are presented
