  • Abstract
    The authors present the design, construction, and magnetic test results of the Intense Microwave Prototype (IMP) free electron laser (FEL) and all of the microwave system special hardware developed for operation as a plasma heating source for the MTX. FELs have produced high-power (200 MW) microwave frequency (140 GHz) pulses that have been successfully transported with greater than 89% efficiency into the MTX tokamak through a windowless, quasi-optical system. IMP will increase the capabilities from 1 pulse at 1/2 Hz to 50 pulses at 5 kHz and with a linear taper on the FEL be able to reach an estimated peak power of up to 5.9 GW
