Abstract
The processing necessary for a radar waveform utilizing complementary phase coding to achieve improved range resolution in a radar system is identified. Choosing complementary phase coding as the specific pulse compression method to be used in this approach allows certain benefits to be realized-provided that the proper processing is carried out. Complementary phase coding offers the promise of exact range sidelobe cancellation. However, its use has been restricted in the past due to degradations arising from nonzero target Doppler as well as pulse-to-pulse target return amplitude variations. A partial solution to this problem which shows the use of these codes in the case of nonzero target Doppler is presented. Including a phase compensation term preserves the desirable sidelobe cancellation properties of complementary codes in the case of a nonzero target Doppler. An overall processing structure is presented for realizing this process. The structure consists of a matched filter, phase compensator, and coherent summer
