Abstract
Computerized adaptive language testing (CALT), supported by item response theory (IRT) and Internet technologies, has become an important aspect in modern testing. This paper first reviews the basic theories in testing and then presents the process of a CALT. Later, key issues of a CALT, such as construction of item banks, item selection and terminations of a test, have been addressed in detail. Besides, the advantages and disadvantages of a CALT are discussed in accordance with the current CALT practice around the world. By doing so, the paper points out that CALT is the new trend in language testing and will be applied massively in the future in China.
