Abstract
Summary form only given. Over the last ten years, a carefully balanced method of assessment has been created for an introductory junior-level engineering design course at Georgia Tech, USA. Here, the authors describe how it is important to assess design students as they are actually doing the procedures which are being taught. Thus, the assessment of design knowledge by having students do design is important; however it presents difficulties in implementation, some of the pitfalls and successes of which are discussed
