Abstract
Summary form only given. The optimal use of critical resources is essential to achieving a better life for us, and a more sustainable future for our planet. Instrumentation for proper information gathering and intelligent systems that enable the analysis of such information and the suggestion of optimal solutions through modeling and prediction are at the core of the solutions that would allow us to build a smarter planet. This is clearly highlighted in the management of the various components and assets that constitute the “systems of systems” of which a city or a national transportation or a water management system are made. In order to implement this concept, innovation is required. This presentation gives some examples from around the world with a special emphasis on what developing countries are doing and what our region can do.
