Abstract
Virtual networking will play an important role in emerging B-ISDN/ATM networks. It permits the construction of virtual private networks (VPNs) over the public networks and provides a reliable method for traffic control and resource management. Current approaches to virtual networking use provisioned pairwise virtual path connections (VPCs). Although a VPC-based network has many advantages, it also decreases resource utilization. We propose a new technique for virtual networking using virtual rooted networks (VRNs), and demonstrate that this solution can fundamentally increase resource sharing and hence utilization while keeping the advantages of VPCs
