  • Abstract
The introduction of a multi-agent system in a wireless ATM network is explored as a means of implementation of adaptive decision making processes in base stations. Since future generation mobile networks are expected to adapt to variable traffic and interference conditions, the proposed intelligent architecture is used to provide better resource (bandwidth) utilization in micro/pico cellular systems supporting a large number of handoffs. This application of the multi-agent concept consisting of computing and adapting thresholds for load control (according to traffic variations in base stations) through a channel borrowing scheme is used to illustrate the potential benefits for mobile networks. The adaptive scheme, known as virtual channel borrowing (VCB), is a potential solution to the nonuniform traffic problem encountered in wireless networks
