Abstract
We describe the methodology and results of parameter optimizations performed with the aid of analytical expressions for the channel-induced distortion in a wavelet-based image communication system. R(D) curves are calculated independently for each subband, with each point on each curve representing (in addition to rate and distortion) an optimal choice of quantizer step size and channel code rate. A global optimization procedure is then performed to identify the best operating point on the R(D) curve for each subband
