Abstract :
In order to accomplish efficient spectrum utilization for data traffic enhanced data rate over GSM evolution (EDGE) has been developed. It has been well integrated in GSM networks. The concept of incremental redundancy (IR) is used in EDGE for ARQ. It has 9 different data formats, called modulation and coding schemes (MCS), one of them is used depending upon IR. The data packets are sent via base transreceiver station (BTS) on a TDMA logical channel, called packet data channel (PDCH). If a BTS stops functioning (i.e. fails) then packets could not be delivered to users of this area. In this work a scheme is suggested to ensure some service to the EDGE users of failure affected area. A model is developed to study the improvement achieved by the above scheme. Efficient utilization of channels, cochannel interference, bit error rate (BER), blocking probability, throughput etc are the main issues addressed for quantifying the impact of BTS failure on EDGE users.
