Abstract :
A new approach is introduced for designing planar UWB antennas. In this method, the target UWB antenna is composed of a planar radiating element in front of a truncated ground plate. This radiating element is designed when it is used primarily in monopole configuration and is shaped with the goal of achieving the best impulse response. Then by placing this radiating element in planar UWB structure, the whole configuration is optimized for the best matching. As an example of this method a new printed antenna is designed, which is named Tulip antenna. The design procedure of this UWB antenna starts with a well known circular disk monopole and goes ahead to reach a Tulip shaped patch antenna. It is shown that the achieved Tulip antenna has a compact size, good dispersion characteristics, simple microstrip feeding structure and easy fabrication process. Numerical results are vindicated by comparing with the measurements.
