  • Abstract
    This paper outlines the importance of the engineered cable cleat when considering power system protection and installation design. Particular focus is placed on the correct specification of the cable cleat in relation to the peak prospective fault current on any given installation. Over ten years of research and development into cable cleats, including hundreds of short circuit tests on both Low Voltage (LV) and High Voltage (HV) cable cleat installations, is drawn upon. Examples of installation failures are given and reasons for these failures are suggested. A specification method is then offered to ensure adequate system protection. The paper also discusses the legislation that is appropriate to this niche area of engineering and power system protection. Standing perceptions are challenged, including the reliance on circuit breakers to arrest a fault, the bursting resistance of a steel wire armoured multi core cable during an actual phase to phase fault, and the often-quoted "fault duration of 1 second or 3 seconds" and its true relevance during a 3 phase fault.
