Abstract :
This paper describes how dynamic line rating (DLR) is applied for load management and protection in two applications to enable a larger penetration of wind generation. One application is installed by Central Networks on a 132 kV double-circuit line between Skegness and Boston (North East of England). Another application of the DLR approach is installed by Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) on the Omagh to Dungannon HOkV double-circuit line. The rating of the line is calculated dynamically from local weather measurements to co-ordinate allowed generation automatically. As a back-up system, in case for some reason the wind farm power output is not reduced on command, tripping of the wind generators is initiated. The paper also includes analysis of the field data gathered from the Central Networks site which is used to verify the accuracy of the relay algorithm.
