Abstract :
Distributed generation offers the potential to maintain supplies to consumers during a system disturbance which results in the loss of grid connection. Although this is not permitted under current UK practice and there are complications from moving from a grid connected mode to an islanding mode, there are no fundamental reasons preventing their use for such a purpose should appropriate measures be taken. One of the principal challenges is the question of a controlled rebuilding of the network to facilitate ´normal´ grid connected operation and the reconnection of the distributed generators. This paper addresses this question and describes the requirements for such a facility and the consequences of implementing it.
