Abstract :
The network requirements for back-up protection and the opportunities created by advances in communication, information and computer networking technologies are discussed in this paper. A sophisticated protection and control algorithm is proposed that uses information from multiple monitoring points to take a broad view of the effect of faults and other disturbances on a transmission network. The algorithm is evaluated using a simulator that models the effect of faults on the South Western part of the UK National Grid network
