Abstract
Architectural relationships and implementation tradeoffs between the two powerful optical computing techniques namely, polarization-encoded optical shadow-casting, and spatial filtering using frequency modulation in grating structures are investigated. As an illustration, a multiple-valued-logic-based arithmetic unit such as a trinary half-subtracter has been designed using both techniques
