Abstract
The Brazilian National Research and Education Network - RNP - is currently engaged in a nationwide program to upgrade the capacity of the communications networks used by the Education and Research institutions in the country. An essential component of this program is the deployment of metropolitan optical networks in the major population centers. The article describes the background to this initiative, the methodology adopted and the expected results
