Abstract

This research paper presents an agricultural decision support system that is able to forecast prices of selected rice varieties, estimate minimum rice requirement for the country, and predict the rice production for a given future period of time, with the aid of a centralized data warehouse. There are several factors that affect the rice production and the rice requirement in Sri Lanka. Those quantifiable factors have been taken into account to build these modules. Price forecasting was done by analyzing past price variations. Subsequently, research was carried out in terms of finding the factors which affect the rice requirement and the rice production in Sri Lanka. This article explores the application of data mining and statistical analyzing tools that provide a fine-tuned decision making procedure with regard to paddy production and rice prices in Sri Lanka.
