This paper empirically explores Chinese and South African managers´ attitudes toward corporate social responsibility in Chinese state-owned mining enterprises in South Africa. The results find that South African managers hold significantly more favourable attitudes towards corporate social responsibility than their Chinese counterparts. More Chinese than South African managers consider corporate social responsibility to be a business case which can be useful to the business. This study reveals the reasons for implementing corporate social responsibility and the different cultural aspects of Chinese `collectivism´ and South African `individualism´.
