Abstract
Software internationalization, the process of making software easier to localize for specific language, has deep implications when applied to speech technology, where the goal of the task lies in the very essence of the particular language. Our work makes two contributions: it proposes a systematic procedure for the internationalization of automatic speech recognition systems. It also proposes a particular decomposition of the phoneticization process that facilitates internationalization by non-expert preparers. We study an international phoneticizing engine that interprets input files supplied in our phonetic language identity format to build a dictionary. IPE is language independent and rule based. Dictionaries created by the IPE can be used with the speech recognition system. IPE defines an easy-to-use systematic approach that can lead to internationalization of automatic speech recognition systems.
