Abstract
This paper presents a detailed analysis of the dispersion characteristics of air-dielectric 1D and 2D photonic crystal (PC) with gain or losses in PC dielectrics using the transfer matrices for 1D and truncated plane wave decomposition for square-cell 2D PC. Using the theory of instabilities the gain/attenuation regimes and wave propagation directions are distinguished for these PC with gain medium.
