Abstract
Permanent magnet (PM) machines have been widely used due to high torque density and high efficiency. However, PM machines have their inherent disadvantages, such as potential irreversible demagnetization due to winding terminal short-circuit failure. In this paper, the design concept of short-circuit fault-tolerance PM machine is proposed after exploring the instinct mechanism of magnetic field inside PM machines. The study shows that based on this concept, it is possible to validate a PM machine design which is truly threephase terminal short-circuit fault-tolerant.
