Abstract :
This paper discusses the simulation and control design of an optimized and downsized auxiliary power unit in a series-hybrid power-train configuration. Vehicle performance, driving range and battery utilization over urban driving cycles for different case studies is presented. Specifically, a ZEBRA battery, which represents the primary energy source and an ICE/HPM generator providing a range extension function, is considered. A dynamic model of the ICE/HPM generator, including electronic rectification stage, is developed and vehicle range with consideration of the battery dynamics have been numerically evaluated via a simulation platform developed in Matlab/Simulink© suitable for the modelling and analysis of combined energy sources and components considered for electric vehicle power-trains.
