Abstract
A general partial differential equation which will apply to a variety of problems in magnetics is given. Specific forms of the equation for particular problem types are provided. An application of one of the equations to an electromagnet is used as an example. The versatility of the FEM (finite element method) is demonstrated by a temperature distribution problem. The results from both examples will provide students with simple examples which they can use to validate their finite element program
