Abstract :
The US Army has embarked upon a program for digitizing the battlefield to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The new digitized Army (Force XXI) will be more integrated, automated and mobile. The increased mobility will dictate increased reliance on wireless communications and seamless communications. This is driving the development of the tactical internet and new joint standards for use over combat network radio (CNR) MIL-STD-188-220A. This paper relates the development of the MIL-STD-188-220A protocol suite, acclaimed as an unprecedented achievement in DoD standards evolution, and related synergistic activities which assured a timely, quality standard, including: the protocol, Joint CNR Working Group, simulation, formal specifications, protocol tester, systems development, testing, and experiment results
