Abstract :
The determination of a valid four-dimensional transformation for rectilinear motion is described. The retarded scalar electric potential field is written in the inertial (unprimed) frame. Using the transformation by invariance (substitution coordinate transformation), the distance factor is employed to deduce the spatial transformations and the phase factor is used to determine the form of the temporal transformation. The existence of the transformation is discussed, and the method is applied to uniform and nonuniform motion.<>
