Author_Institution :
Broadband Wireless Assoc., Ireland
Abstract :
The paper reports on technological developments in order to provide a focus for the rapidly emerging industry and to highlight trends and issues confronting the broadband wireless industry. We are in a the midst of two unique transitions (1) a technological transformation of TV and video from analogue to digital systems and (2) an economic-regulatory watershed from monopolistic and /or public communications infrastructure to a more pro-market pro-consumer competitive framework. From an employment and skills perspective this may be daunting perhaps even traumatic for those unwilling to adapt. This is certainly an unprecedented era of rapid change and innovation. As consumers are certainly demanding enhanced information products and services. We are excited by their potential price-performance, yet frustrated often by their shortcomings. In this mix it is held that digital broadband wireless services have great potential
