Abstract
Summary form only given. Intelligent vehicle highway systems (IVHSs) may be the next major step in the evolution of transportation systems around the world. In the US, IVHSs are divided into five major areas: advanced traveller information systems; advanced transportation management systems; advanced vehicle control systems; commercial vehicle operations; and advanced public transit systems. All areas rely heavily on some form of communications and, in most cases, on RF data communications. These in turn break down into four main types: intravehicle; vehicle-to-vehicle; vehicle-to-infrastructure; and infrastructure-to-infrastructure.<>
