Abstract
In this paper, both position and speed controls using the sliding mode for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor are presented, accounting for the time delay in the control algorithm calculation and for the maximum power power converter switching frequency capability. The sliding mode technique is very advantageous for making the system robust to parameters variations and external disturbances. A pulse width modulation technique and some other strategies are introduced to reduce chattering in the original control algorithm (H. Hashimoto et al., 1988) and to maintain good performance at practical calculation delays and switching frequencies. Simulation results of both the position and speed controllers as well as experimental results of position control are presented
