Abstract :
A 60 HP brushless doubly-fed machine (BDFM) pump drive is to replace a wound rotor induction machine (WRIM) drive in a local waste-water treatment plant. This paper discusses a simple, microcontroller based search algorithm to maximize the efficiency of the BDFM pump drive. The algorithm minimizes the total input power that is supplied to the drive at any speed and load condition. This algorithm can be implemented on the same process controller as used for pump drive speed control. While the scheme is described for a pump drive application. It can be used for any BDFM adjustable speed drive. Control design and implementation details are presented. Experimental results based on a laboratory prototype illustrate speed control and efficiency maximization
