Abstract :
A pulsed Doppler ultrasound technique was used to investigate vortex shedding in models of proximal side-to-end anastomosis in pulsatile flow. Vortices were detected in the graft segment during the deceleration phase of the flow cycle. The vortex amplitude varied with distance into the graft reaching a peak at between 2 and 4 diameters downstream of the anastomosis, depending on the Reynolds number, while the measured vortex shedding frequency remained relatively constant with distance at between 8 and 13 Hz for mean Reynolds numbers of 1009 and 523
