Abstract :
The heart is characterized by its pump function graph and the arterial system by its input impedance. From this information one can obtain power and efficiency and the RC-time of the arterial system. Heart and arterial system are matched in two aspects. The first matching aspect is in terms of heart period, inverse of heart rate, and arterial decay time, their ratio being the same in mammals. The second aspect is that the heart´s volume is minimized resulting in a pump operating at optimum power transfer and efficiency
