Summary form only given, as follows. Obtaining a patent is an important means of protecting the intellectual property of local as well as foreign individuals, companies and institutions in Australia. This paper provides an overview of the functions of the Australian Patent Office together with the legal infrastructure in Australia. A review on the procedures for obtaining patent protection in Australia is also provided.
