Abstract :
This paper describes the FE modeling and analysis for the design of 2.5kW 100 krpm 2-phase permanent magnet brushless motor intended to be used as a high-speed turbine. The electromagnetic characteristics and performance of the motor such as back-emf, cogging torque, inductance and output torque are computed in 2-D finite element analysis. Further investigation and analysis are also given for the estimation of rotor eddy current losses, which is very critical for high speed machine. Then, a comparison of rotor eddy current losses is made between typical high-speed 3-phase and 2-phase permanent magnet brushless machines. The FE results, for similar rated power and dimensions, show that the 2-phase permanent magnet brushless motor exhibits a significantly lower rotor eddy current losses than the 3-phase motor.
