Distributed applications management based on ODP viewpoint concepts and CORBA

Today´s complex IT infrastructures require an integrated management of networking devices, end systems, and applications. The complexity of this task increased with the recent introduction of different management architectures. Currently, putting an “umbrella management” on these architectures is considered as an appropriate way to solve this problem. Introducing such an “umbrella management” solution however requires management models for resources that are generally applicable and useful for different management purposes even in heterogeneous environments that rely on different management architectures. Existing management models for distributed applications are mostly proprietary, biased towards specific operating systems, a specific class of computers (PCs, workstations etc.) or dedicated to one application. Having to cope with these specifics adds unnecessary complexity to management applications. For integrated management and, as a consequence, for rapid deployment of open distributed processing and distributed applications, it is crucial to overcome these problems. Management models for distributed applications should therefore be as homogeneous as possible so that they provide a sound basis for implementation of integrated management applications and for gateways between management architectures
